Description : Interleukin 15 (IL-15) is an immunomodulating cytokine mainly produced by adherent peripheral blood mononuclear cells, fibroblasts and epithelial cells and stimulates the proliferation of T lymphocytes. IL-15 shares many biological properties with IL-2, including T, B and natural killer cell-stimulatory activities. IL-15 is essential in the development, survival and activation of NK cells. Increased expression of IL-15 has been implicated with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and diseases affiliated with retroviruses.
The human IL-15 cDNA encodes a 162 aa protein with a 29 aa signal sequence and a 19 aa propeptide. Both human and simian IL-15 are active on mouse cells. Recombinant human IL-15 is a 12.8 kDa protein containing 114 amino acid residues.
