Description : Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor, is a potent growth and angiogenic cytokine produced in vascularized tissues. VEGF is a potent mediator of both angiogenesis and vasculogenesis, and stimulates proliferation and survival of endothelial cells. VEGF signals through the three receptors: fms-like tyrosine kinase (flt-1), KDR and flt4. VEGF induces angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth, mediates increased vascular permeability, promotes cell migration, and inhibits apoptosis.
Humans express alternately spliced isoforms of 121, 145, 165, 183, 189, and 206 amino acids (aa) in length. VEGF165 is the most abundant and potent isoform. Recombinant human VEGF is a 38.2 kDa homodimeric protein consisting of two 165 amino acid polypeptide chains.
